Does the blue light in the LED light hurt the eye?

May 28, 2023

Since the beginning of this year, the statement about LED "blue light spilling eye" has appeared many times, and some people are afraid to use LED lights. What is the blue light in the LED? Will it hurt the eye? Is the LED light safe? The reporter interviewed the expert.

Is blue light harmful to the eyes?

The degree of blue light hazard depends on the total blue light dose received by the human eye. The safety of the same color temperature LED lamp and energy saving lamp is almost the same.

At the 2013 China (Shanghai) International Semiconductor Lighting Application Technology Forum held recently, experts at the conference discussed the issue of Blu-ray security. According to Prof. Tong Tongsheng, a professor of optoelectronic information engineering at Zhejiang University, visible light is composed of seven colors of red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and purple. Among them, light with a wavelength of 435-500 nm corresponds to blue and cyan. The scientific community usually refers to the wavelength range of 400-500 nm as the "blue light region."

Associate Professor Zhang Shanduan of Fudan University's Institute of Electric Light Sources pointed out: "The principle of white LED is that the blue LED chip stimulates the conversion of yellow phosphor to form white light. The blue light hazard refers to the 400-500 nm blue light band of the light source if the brightness is too high and the eyes are long. Time to look directly at the light source may cause photochemical damage to the retina. The degree of blue light hazard depends on the amount of blue light that the human eye accumulates under the light."

"The technology commonly used in LED lamps on the market, 'blue chip + yellow phosphor', makes the blue light content of LED light relatively high, but this does not mean that LED lights are more eye-catching than other lamps." Zhang Shanduan said that what they did In the comparison experiment, the safety of the same color temperature LED lamp and energy saving lamp is almost the same.

Color temperature is the most common indicator of the spectral quality of the source. The "warm light" color temperature is lower, while the "cold light" color temperature is relatively higher. As the color temperature increases, the proportion of blue radiation increases and blue light increases. At the same time, brightness also affects the proportion of blue light. In general, fluorescent lamps and LED lamps of the same color temperature, as long as the brightness of the latter is not more than three times that of the former, is basically harmless. However, for some LED lamps that are too bright, the blue ratio may exceed the safe value. Zhang Shanduan said that with the maturity of the LED process, manufacturers no longer need to improve the color temperature and power of the luminaire to achieve high lumens, and objectively reduce the possibility of excessive blue light.

Sun Xinghuai, president of the Shanghai Eye, Otolaryngology Hospital, said that Blu-ray is not unique to LED lights. Blu-rays are abundant in mobile phones and computer screens. The hospital has never received any cases of eye injuries due to the use of LED lights.

Yu Anqi, director of the National Electric Light Source Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Shanghai), believes that answering this question is as difficult as answering whether the sun is safe. In general, sunlight is safe; but if you look at the sun, it can cause eye burns.

National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance and China Lighting Society recently organized more than 10 well-known experts in China to discuss the issue of “Blu-ray is eye-catching” and formed a white paper entitled “General Lighting LED and Blu-ray”. Professor Zhou Taiming, a representative of the white paper writing group, said, "The white light LED light source has similar blue light radiation on the human retina than traditional light sources such as fluorescent lamps and metal halide lamps, and will not cause harm to the human eye."

How to use LED lamps

Don't look straight ahead, new mandatory standards are being worked out

"If you buy a qualified luminaire and use it properly, LED lights are no more dangerous than traditional luminaires." Yu Anqi said that China's national standard "Photobiosafety of lamps and lamp systems", the calculation method for blue light hazard and quantification Make a clear introduction, and point out that there is no difference between LED lighting products and other light sources, which is within the safety range specified by the exposure limits.

But experts say that this standard is a "recommendation standard" rather than a "mandatory standard."

Professor Tong Tongsheng said that internationally, according to the intensity of blue light, light biosafety standards for blue light have been developed, and various values that may cause blue light hazard are set. For example, a light source product that does not have a blue light hazard is called a “zero-type product”; a product that has a small blue light hazard and the eye cannot be directly viewed from a light source for a long time is called “a type of product”; a light source with a large blue light hazard Known as the "second-class product." Currently used as the basic zero class and class of LED lighting, if it is the second class, it is mandatory to put on the "eye can not stare at" label.
