LED light blue band control improves sleep

May 09, 2023

A Japanese research team recently discovered that controlling the blue light band of led lamps can improve sleep, which will be used to develop lighting fixtures suitable for sleep.

Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It is the most secreted in the night without light. It can help lower body temperature and pulse, help sleep, and reduce the secretion of melatonin in the morning. People wake up slowly. Therefore it is also called "sleep hormone". Various lighting devices and digital devices in modern society can affect the secretion of melatonin, which leads to sleep disorders.

Research groups at Nagoya University and Aichi Prefectural University in Japan have pointed out that the blue light band of LED is closely related to the secretion of melatonin and is the "culprit" that interferes with the secretion of melatonin. Based on this, the researchers developed LEDs that can artificially adjust the blue light band and tested them.

In the two-week test, the test subjects had improved nighttime sleep conditions, nighttime sleep more stable, and less likely to doze off during the day. In addition, their cognitive status has improved.

Researchers believe that the invention can be used to make "sleep-friendly" lighting fixtures.
