Small space design: WGV entertainment room design and renovation of the old guard room
Editor's note: In space, we often emphasize a design concept: see the light. This is of course excellent, but the mountain has no fixed shape, and the lighting design has no theorem, which needs to be handled flexibly according to space. In this case, we can see the coherence of the concept of “seeing the light without seeing the light”, and we can see that the lamp itself is strengthened into the iconic element of space. Divergence, this is not considered: thick makeup and light touch two suitable?
The WGV insurance company in Stuttgart, Germany, decided to build a company gathering point at its headquarters – a space for both buffets and events. As a lighting consultant for the project, Pfarré Lighting Design encountered two special challenges.
The first challenge comes from the site itself, a three-level ladder-like building adjoining a protected historic building, the Old Guardhouse.
The second challenge is that the ceiling is divided into three steps, ranging in height from 12 to 13.5 feet. The adjacent two steps introduce sunlight through the skylight to illuminate the 3,767 square feet of open space.

Lighting designers work closely with architects and acousticians to create a delicate light environment that makes light quality, not luminaires, an eye-catching element in space. To this end, they customized a 10W, 3000K LED illuminator as part of the ceiling system to provide indirect, soothing ambient lighting, and in this way to make the indoor space of different layers as a whole. Between the two custom fixtures, the LED spotlights in the box provide direct illumination for the dining table.

The vertical ceiling of the central ceiling is wrapped in artistic blocks of red, magenta and purple, rendering colors in the interior space. The slightly lower ceiling vertical finishes are decorated with blue, magenta and purple art blocks, giving the interior another set of shades.

The old guardhouse is adjacent to the cafeteria and open space. A sloping garden terrace and ramped walkway connect the old and new areas together, and buried lights illuminate the trees along the road. The old guardhouse was transformed into a venue for events. Instead of seeing the light as the scattered area, it is specially designed to customize an octahedron chandelier as an iconic element of the space. The lamp is available in three sizes, with fluorescent lighting and dimming.

It seems simple, but it is not easy. This ingenious lighting design creates three spaces that are independent and interconnected, and show the essence of lighting design to the fullest.
Judge's point of view:
The light presents the interior space structure very clearly.
The upper light on the ceiling brings a natural light-like perfect soft light environment.
