Solar military uniform: use body heat, solar power

April 07, 2023

At present, British soldiers have more and more weapons and electronic equipment. The individual soldier’s load is about 45 to 70 kilograms, of which the battery accounts for more than 10%. Because of the limited storage capacity of the battery, the soldiers have to frequently return to the base for charging. It affected the duration and motivation of the operation. The British Engineering Physics Research Center is preparing to build a new generation of "Solar Warriors" and is developing a special military uniform to reduce the load on soldiers' battlefields. Scientists hope to use soldiers' body heat and solar power to replace the traditional cumbersome battery with their military uniforms.

The researchers said that the "Solar Warrior" system can provide continuous power for radios, global positioning systems, and high-tech weapons, but its weight is only half that of conventional batteries. They are also developing a new type of knitted fabric that incorporates photovoltaic solar cells (PV cells) and body heat exchangers into clothing.
